Synopsis

Wataru Minakami fails an entrance exam and therefore is left behind by his friends. He suddenly finds out that his father has enrolled him in a school in Promised Island and is suddenly whisked there. Upon arrival, he finds out that he has twelve sisters who look forward to spend his time with them. He has to face to a decision to go back to his possibly stereotypical lifestyle in Tokyo or be in Promised Island together with his sisters.

Kaichō wa Maid-sama!

(会長はメイド様!,The Student Council President is a Maid!?)

Is a shōjo manga series by Hiro Fujiwara. It is currently serialized in Hakusensha's monthly shōjo manga magazine, LaLa. There are currently 8 published volumes under the Hana to Yume Comics imprint in Japan. In their Anime Expo 2008 panel, North American publisher Tokyopop announced its various newly licensed series and that Kaichō wa Maid-sama! would be titled Maid-sama!. An anime adaptation is scheduled for TV broadcast in April 1, 2010.(OUT ARDY!!!)

PLOT

Seika High School, once an all-boys school notorious for its wild students and for generally being a terrifying place for girls, has recently become a co-ed school.

With the female population still a minority and living in fear of the over-the-top antics of the males, Misaki Ayuzawa takes it into her own hands to reform the school and allow the girls to feel safe in the rough environment.
Training, studying and even becoming the first female student council president of the school, Misaki has gained a reputation among the male students body as an uptight boy-hating dictator and as a shining hope for the teachers and fellow female students.

However, despite her tough-as-nails appearance, she secretly works part-time at a maid cafe in order to support her family.

Unfortunately, her hard-earned reputation is threatened when the popular and somewhat impassive Usui Takumi takes an interest in her after discovering her in a maid uniform after school.

Seika High School

Misaki Ayuzawa (鮎沢美咲, Ayuzawa Misaki)

The protagonist of the story, Misaki is the first female Student Council President at Seika High and known for her extremely demanding and aggressive attitude towards boys. She relentlessly attempts to reform them to live up to what she considers are acceptable standards of behavior. Though many of the male students fear and even hate her, the ones who get to know her come to see that she's actually very fair and willing to help anyone who needs it.
She eventually becomes widely respected for her exceptional academic ability, her great athletic skill, and her many accomplishments as President. Her negative attitude towards males is mostly attributed to her father amassing a huge debt and then disappearing. Misaki became determined to make sure her spacey and helpless mother, Minako (美奈子) would not have to work so hard to support both Misaki and her younger sister, Suzuna (紗奈). To this extent, she secretly and, at first reluctantly, works as a maid-waitress at Café Maid Latte. Misaki is always driven to do her best regardless of the endeavour, and has a strong sense of justice, though she also has a tendency to forget her own well being in the process of helping others.
She gradually develops feelings for Usui Takumi, but refuses to acknowledge them until volume 7 of the manga, when she tells Usui how confused she is about her feelings when he is around her. After Misaki is re-elected as President, she finds Usui on school's roof, and he stands behind her with his arms around her waist; though he tells her she can run away if she dislikes it, she doesn't, saying "it's not like I hate this," to which Usui responds "I don't intend to let you run away, Ayuzawa." She recently turned seventeen.

Takumi Usui (碓氷拓海, Usui Takumi)

One of the most popular boys at Seika High, Usui appears to take little interest in anything and prefers to observe things as they unfold. He proves to be extraordinarily talented in a number of different fields including; cooking, playing the violin, playing chess, and understanding table etiquette. Indicating that he is likely from a wealthy family.
He's in fact an illegitimate child: his rich mother (whose maiden name is Usui) had an affair with an unknown japanese man. She died giving birth to Takumi. To keep this fact secret his english grandfather sent him to his grandmother's familly in Japan, thus having little contact with his older british half-brother. Adopted by his mother's cousin, most of the education he received was through tutoring, partialy explaining his academic excellence.
He grew tired and bored of this and preferred to attend a standard high school ultimately leading to his family renting him a high rise apartment in the city. During his first year, he quickly became popular among the girls but not being interested in them, he systematically rejected them when they confessed-- thus being considered like a bully by Misaki. At the beginning of his second year, he develops an interest in Misaki being the first to learn she is working at a maid café, but chooses to keep her secret. He regularly tells Misaki he likes her, but she dismisses his behavior simply as a joke or harassment. It is because of this, along with: his uncanny ability to appear whenever she needs him, his wide-ranging skills, and the fact that he survived jumping off the school's roof into the swimming pool, that Misaki often refers to him as a "perverted space alien" (or some variation thereof).
Regardless, he continually helps and watches over her, offering insightful advice on how to deal with the boys at Seika effectively and even becomes possessive of her (especially around Shintani Hinata). At one point, he tells Kanou that he doesn't want to date a girl seriously, which Kanou initially misunderstands as Usui not being serious about the President; later, however, Kanou realizes that "dating" and genuinely caring for/loving a girl are different things to Usui.
While Misaki is campaigning for re-election as student council President, she asks him to stay away from her for the length of the race so that his popularity won't unfairly influence voting in her favor. Usui agrees but replies, "...and it's such valuable, precious little time..." implying that his time with Misaki is limited. Though the reasons for this aren't known, Usui's mysterious meeting with Miyabigaoka High School's student council president is most likely related in some way. Soon after he meets with his former tutor Maria Miyazono, who became teacher at his high school. Because he didn't want to tell her about his past and her suspicious belief that he could have a romantic relationship with Maria; Misaki started to feel depressed. But after that Usui informed her that it's in fact Maria who has a crush on him, tells her to be prudent about that and agrees to reveal his history. In the book on his character information it said that he is seventeen years old. He will soon be leaving for Miyabigaoka High School - a request from his family.

Hinata Shintani (深谷陽向, Shintani Hinata)
A childhood friend of Misaki who came to Seika High in search of his one-sided first love; Misaki. When they were children, he was an overweight boy who Misaki saved when he fell from a tree. He fell in love with her, but soon moved away to live with his grandfather in the countryside when his parents died.

When he returns, his appearance changed considerably from losing so much weight (supposedly from eating nothing but vegetables), though he remains a glutton. He also knows about Misaki's part time job.
He admires Usui's strength and talent, though Usui seems indifferent to Shintani outside of his monopolizing Misaki's time.

He refuses to give up on Misaki despite being fully aware of her and Usui's feelings for each other, having resolved prior to moving that he would not let Misaki having a boyfriend deter him.

Misaki's mother and sister both note that he physically resembles Misaki's father, though he claims that he would never abandon the people he cares about.

Shouichirou Yukimura (幸村祥一郎, Yukimura Shōichirō)

The Vice President of the Student Council, he tries to help Misaki where he can, and enjoys office routine.

At first, he, like the rest of the student council, is fearful of Misaki, but he eventually comes to be on fairly close terms with both her and Usui.
Yukimura is hard-working, earnest, and capable of doing most administrative work, but is not athletic in the least, especially in comparison to Misaki and Usui.

His gentle, almost feminine demeanour and slight stature make him appear somewhat weak, a fact he is sensitive about, even lamenting his lack of strength for his inability to be more helpful to Misaki.

He's both terrified and in awe of Usui, after Usui kisses him as a "reward for his hardwork" (which, unbeknownst to all, Usui only did to make light of kissing Misaki, after noticing that she was visibly upset and incredibly jumpy around him).

Yukimura has a seven-year-old sister named Rui.

Naoya Shirakawa (白川直也, Shirakawa Naoya)

A male student at Seika High School who initially dislikes Misaki because of her forceful methods of reforming Seika. He and his friends discover that she works at a maid café early on in the story, but after he is defended by Usui, they quickly become her biggest fans, as well as regulars at Cafe Maid Latte, often referred to as the "idiot trio." His nickname is “Shiroyan.”He also used to be a delinquent in middle school known as White Demon.

The second of the “idiot trio,” which includes Shirakawa Naoya and Ryuunosuke Kurosaki. A closet otaku, he is actually good at drawing manga illustrations and enjoys writing. His friends call him “Ikkun.”

Sakura Hanazono (花園さくら, Hanazono Sakura?)

A good friend of Misaki's and one of the few female students at Seika High, Sakura is friendly and cheerful and, like the rest of the girls, relies on Misaki for protection from the wild behaviour of the boys.
She is quite popular amongst the boys, but frequently rejects their confessions; in particular, she’s rejected ex-rugby captain Masaru Gouda (剛田将, Gōda Masaru) one hundred times. According to Shizuko, Sakura falls in love without carefully considering what the person is really like, as exampled by her persistent feelings for the two-faced, womanising singer of a popular band from a nearby high school.

Shizuko Kaga (加賀しず子, Kaga Shizuko)

One of Misaki and Sakura’s friends, a sensible and intelligent girl who often spends lunchtime with them.

Shizuko is a member of the flower arranging club and is good at math, but isn’t very good at physical activities.

She has an older brother in university and a younger sister in junior high school; according to Sakura, the three of them look very alike.

Soutarou Kanou (叶爽太郎, Kanō Sōtarō)
A withdrawn male student who is initially against Misaki as the student council President because of her aspirations of increasing the female population of Seika High.

In order to sabotage her presidency, Kanou tries to hypnotize Misaki, Usui, and the student council with his pupil-less eyes (one of the very few, random supernatural aspects of the series) into ruining Misaki’s reputation.

It is revealed that his gynophobic attitude comes from his mother abandoning his family when he was young and his father warning him to be wary of women, and after failing to hypnotize Misaki, she punishes him by assigning him to work closely with his female classmates during the school's cultural festival, in hopes of forcing him to get over his fear.

The punishment is ultimately successful, and he slowly becomes friendlier with Misaki and the rest of his female peers, as well as with Yukimura.
Though he runs against Misaki during her re-election as President, he opposes using underhanded means to gain victory, remains on good terms with her, and is genuinely surprised when he realizes his supporters weren't aware of the extent of all that Misaki had accomplished, asking them "didn't you guys already know that the student council president is an incredible person?"

Maria Miyazono (宮園マリア, Miyazono Maria)
A young and attractive English teacher at Seika High.

She may have non-japanese ancestry because of her name and the comments on her looks. It's also hinted that she had lived in a wealthy environment.

She's an acquaintance of Tora Igarashi who made her join this high school, in order to make Usui quit Seika High.
Wearing revealing clothes, having a large bust and looking very small and cute, she attracts the attention of male teachers and students since her first day at school.

Consequently, Misaki begins to make everything to ensure her protection.

Later Misaki learns that Maria and Usui know each other very well and she begins to think that Maria may become a rival.

But the truth is revealed when Maria confess her love to Misaki moved by the way she took care of her: Maria was sent to seduce Misaki not Usui (who is in fact a former student of her).

She has a fiance, Shinji, but she considers him as a mere childhood friend.

She also knows about Misaki's part time job.

Café Latte

Satsuki (さつき)

The manager of Café Latte and Misaki’s boss, a 30 year old woman who has a tendency to voice out her fantasies. She is a cheerful woman who enjoys her job because it allows her to make others happy. She is very understanding of Misaki’s circumstances, knowing that Misaki does not particularly enjoy working at a maid café, and is perceptive of other people’s feelings. Satsuki also ends up hiring Usui as a part-time cook, much to Misaki’s chagrin.
Honoka (ほのか)

Voiced by: Kana Asumi (anime)

An employee at Café Latte. She can become somewhat maniacal about getting in character for her job and criticizes Misaki for her initial resistance to acting parts outside of her comfort range, as well as for being ashamed of working at Maid Latte and hiding it from her peers.

Erika (エリカ)
Voiced by: Mariya Ise (anime)
A college student working at Café Latte. She notes that Misaki is strong and picks up work quickly, and claims that it doesn't feel like Misaki is younger than her. She has a tendency to eavesdrop and is described as having a “voice fetish.”

Subaru (すばる?)
Voiced by: Kana Ueda(anime)
An employee at Café Latte. Like Honoka, she does not have a full-time job and makes a living from part-time work. She considers Misaki to be hard working.
Sayu (さゆ), Gon-chan (ゴンちゃん)
Two other employees at Café Latte. Sayu is 18 and Gon-chan is 20 years old. They do not appear often.

Aoi Hyoudou (兵藤葵, Hyōdō Aoi?)

Satsuki’s nephew, the son of Satsuki's older brother, and a junior high school student who enjoys dressing like a girl. Likes "cute things", and being the center of attention. His androgynous features allow him to pass off as a girl and his female persona is well-known as a cute internet idol. Aoi enjoys toying with the feelings of men, but is eventually exposed as a boy by Misaki. He is generally short-tempered and has little patience. He becomes embarrassed after doing something kind or showing affection for someone; then suddenly becomes angry(he can't show his true feelings very well). Misaki is under the impression that he hates her; he frequently scolds her for her poor fashion sense and unfeminine strength. Even so, it seems he has some sort of interest in her (not necessarily romantic). He later yells at Misaki for not being more decisive about her relationship with Usui, and for leading Shintani on, even if she was doing it unintentionally. It's this scolding that eventually pushes her admit to Shintani (and probably for the first time, clearly, to herself) that she does in fact have feelings for Usui.

Nagisa Hyoudou (兵藤なぎさ, Hyōdō Nagisa)
Satsuki’s younger sister and Aoi's aunt. Nagisa is the manager of a beach house known as “Ocean House.” She asks for Satsuki and her employees to come and work at her beach house during the summer since her shop is not as popular as she would like. Nagisa is somewhat tough on Aoi for trying to dress like a girl because her older brother sent Aoi to her beach house to become more masculine.

Miyabigaoka High School

Tora Igarashi (五十嵐虎, Igarashi Tora)
Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (anime)
The Student Council President at Miyabigaoka High School, he initially appears as a gentleman who marvels at Misaki and the changes she has brought to Seika High, offering her a chance to come to Miyabigaoka with an exceptional loan. He is quickly revealed to be a lecherous young man who has become bored with the women surrounding him, who are easily submissive because of his wealth. He enjoys causing drama around him and he thinks that money can buy anything. Misaki's strong will and outright rejection of his monetary bribe to have her join the Miyabigaoka Student Council captures his interest. It is later revealed that Tora has some ties to or knowledge of Usui's past or background, which he may be exploiting to some as of yet unknown end.

Kanade Maki (真木奏, Maki Kanade)
The Vice President of the Student Council at Miyabigaoka High, he and Igarashi attempt to buy out Café Latte and change it into a butler café. Misaki, Usui, and the Café Latte staff are able to prevent him from realizing his plans through a competition.

Hirofumi Koganei (小金井博文, Koganei Hirofumi)
A bespectacled student at Miyabigaoka High School who looks down upon Seika students. After insulting two students for taking an interest in chess, they hit him and Misaki forces them to go with her to apologize to him. When she discovers the reason why they attacked Koganei, she demands that Koganei apologize to her students as well. He agrees, only on the condition that they defeat him in chess, which Usui does with little trouble. Koganei is ranked fourth in the nation as a chess player. He was originally intended to be the president of Miyabigaoka High School Council by the author, but rejected by the editor.

Plot
A 15 year old boy, Hiroshi Kuzumi, has recently moved into a new town in the mountains. The town is separated into new and old streets by the river, and many mysterious local cultures still remain. Although confused and enjoying his new life, one person kept her distance from him: class committee member Kushinada Nemuru. In their few encounters she gave him a word of advice: "Stay away from the old streets."

Main characters

Hiroshi Kuzumi (九澄博士, Kuzumi Hiroshi)

Hiroshi is a 15 year old boy and is the main character of the story. His family moved to the city of Jōga due to reasons relating to his father's line of work. The kanji for his name can also be read as "Professor", so many people call him Hakase (Professor) as a nickname. Hiroshi is not fond of this nickname, because it makes people believe that he is smarter than he is. Despite this, he still allows Kaname to call him by it. Hiroshi later learns from Nemuru that he is a 'Temptation', a rare human who emits a subtle scent so intoxicating to Jouga wolves that constant exposure will drive them insane.

Nemuru Kushinada (櫛名田眠, Kushinada Nemuru?)
Voiced by: Mariya Ise

Nemuru is the 15 year old sole daughter of the Kushinada clan, the family with the most political power and presence in Jōga. Nemuru, as part of her role as the Hunter, patrols the city at night clad in an elaborate ceremonial outfit and wolf mask and wielding a scythe, hunting for Fallen, which she is charged with executing. She is the class president of Hiroshi's class. Nemuru is initially very cold to Hiroshi because she considers him to be an eyesore. Despite this, she eventually warms towards him and they become friends.

Isuzu Tsumuhana (摘花五十鈴, Tsumuhana Isuzu)
Voiced by: Emiri Katō

Isuzu is a 15 year old girl who lives next door to Hiroshi. She is tomboyish and extremely affectionate towards Hiroshi, sometimes to his dismay. Kaname is Isuzu's best friend. She has a brother named Issei, who attended university before becoming a "Fallen" and is killed by Nemuru. She herself becomes a "Fallen" and attacks Hiroshi, but is spared her brother's fate.

Mana Kuzumi (九澄マナ, Kuzumi Mana?)
Voiced by: Saki Fujita

Mana is Hiroshi's 12 year old younger sister. Due to a car accident she is bound to a wheelchair. In spite of this, she strives to be independent, and becomes quite annoyed when her brother rushes to her side to help her with the smallest of tasks.

Kaname Asagiri (朝霧かなめ, Asagiri Kaname)
Voiced by: Mai Fuchigami

Kaname is a 16 year old girl who moved to the Jōga with her family a few months before Hiroshi and she is Isuzu's best friend. Being the eldest of her, Hiroshi and Isuzu, she tends to act as the voice of the reason for the group. Kaname has somewhat of a dark personality, and does not hesitate to tease or trick her two friends. She is interested in the occult and loves city legends and folklore.

White Wolf Kannon (白狼観音, Hakurō Kannon?)

She is a deity who prowls Jōga, carrying out the god of the lands's will to rid it of the fallen "wolves". She appears as a young girl wearing an elaborate white outfit and wolf-like mask. She is named after the bodhisattva Kannon. Her true form is later revealed to be Kaori, a lady Hiroshi and Mana meet while having a walk.

Plot
The tale of Elemental Gelade is set in the world of Guardia where beings called Edel Raids co-exist with humans. Edel Raids have the ability to fuse with a human and become a living weapon. The story focuses on the adventures of a young sky pirate named Cou Van Giruet, an Edel Raid named Reverie Metherlance, and three guardians of an Edel Raid protection organization called Arc Aile named Cisqua, Rowen, and Kuea. Reverie Metherlance is set on journeying to the legendary land of gold called Edel Garden, but it turns out that she is a powerful and rare Edel Raid which leads to many villains attempting to kidnap her for themselves.

Coud Van Giruet:

Coud Van Giruet, better known as Coud, is a young member of the Red Lynx sky pirates. He finds Reverie Metherlence in a coffin that was picked up as loot in a raid. He reacts and becomes her Pledger, someone who bonds with a Edel Raid and he promises her that he will be the one to escort her to Edel Garden. He soon realizes he has deep feelings for Ren and does his best to fight on his own, not wanting to needlessly waste her energy. Although being a sky pirate, he is a kind person who hates to see the weak getting bullied and is one of the only few people who consider Edel Raids as people instead of weapons. And, despite being a sky pirate, he has absolutely no skill at driving and/or flying ANY vehicle. However, he improved quite a bit by the time the anime ended.

<u>Reverie Metherlence

Age:14-15

Reverie Metherlence, better known as Ren, is an Edel Raid and direct descendant of the Metherlence bloodline. She is also one of the Seven Glittering Jewels (or Shichiko-hoju), an Edel Raid line said to be the strongest. She recharges her powers by sleeping, which happens fairly often. In the beginning, she stated that she had hated Cou because he was human, but after he does his best to protect her from an invasion, she reacts with him and begins to think better of him. As the story progresses, she realizes that she has developed feelings for Cou. Her elemental gelade is on her hair above her forehead. Her elemental power is wind, which she best uses both defensively and offensively. Her weapon form is a giant sword on Cou's right arm; the appearance of the sword differs between the anime and manga.

Cisqua

Cisqua is the energetic and upbeat leader of one of Arc Aile's Edel Raid Complete Protection Association squads consisting of Rowen and Kuea. She is honest and passionate about her work, but only because of her desire to be promoted and her love for money. Cisqua is modeled from a character the creator drew in middle and high school and B.B. Hood from the Darkstalkers series.^[3]

Cisqua is not an Edel Raid Pledger, but she is well versed in martial arts and gunmanship. Despite having a small frame, she's physically strong and capable on taking down well trained Pledgers such as the Edel Raid Hunter, Wolx Hound. Underneath her robes and hat, she keeps an arsenal of firearms, missiles, knives, and other weapons she uses to fulfill her missions. Cisqua's gun can be adjusted to become a launcher, shotgun, or machine gun. Her sister is Merfond.

Rowen

Rowen is a guardian of Arc Aile, and is occasionally tasked to assist with his senior in rank, Cisqua. He is a young blond-haired man that tends to dislike conflict. In contrast to the impulsive and somewhat outrageous Cisqua, Rowen is logical, polite, and considerate of others.

Rowen is very intelligent and seems to be well skilled in multiple areas, making it seem as if he was perfect. Whether it is cooking or fighting he seems to excel at it. However Rowen claims to not be entirely perfect and have weaknesses as well. He is an excellent cook which is an ability that the other members appreciate. Rowen is also the only member who is consistently doing jobs to meet ends with the party's expenses.

Kuea / Kullweet Envatilia

Kuea, whose real name is Kullweet Envatilia, is a first class Edel Raid from Arc Aile and is Rowen's partner. Her garnet red elemental gelade are on the back of both her hands which she covers with arm length gloves. Out of the five main characters, Kuea wears the most revealing clothes, however the creator modeled her character from an old male character she once drew in the past.^[3] When Kuea gets hungry - which seems to be often - she can't react, so she eats enormous amounts of food at a time. It is an ongoing gag that she'll eat anything and anyone and she nibbles on Cisqua when she is extremely hungry, her hunger-induced stupor leading her to view Cisqua's head as an apple and in episode 4, she gnaws on Rowen's head, which he ignores and normally greets Cou.

Kuea loves to battle and often jumps into fights hastily. When reacted, she increases Rowen's fighting speed. She takes the weapon form of double blades that Rowen wields on each hand and six chained sickles on his back which can detach and attack opponents from a distance. Her attacks are designed for piercing over slicing. Kuea and Rowen can perform an Obligath, a technique that enables them to chant two songs simultaneously. This technique requires complete synchronicity between the pledger and Edel Raid, and is thus not an easy feat to accomplish.

Who Are Vocaloid?

The Character Vocal Series is a computer music program that synthesizes singing in Japanese. Developed by Crypton Future Media, it utilizes Yamaha's Vocaloid 2 technology with specially recorded vocals of voice actors. To create a song, the user must input the melody and lyrics. A piano roll type interface is used to input the melody and the lyrics can be entered on each note. The software can change the stress of the pronunciations, add effects such as vibrato, or change the dynamics and tone of the voice.

The series is intended for professional musicians as well as light computer music users. The programmed vocals are designed to sound like an idol singer from the future. According to Crypton, because professional singers refused to provide singing data, in fear that the software might create their singing voice's clones, Crypton changed their focus from imitating certain singers to creating characteristic vocals. This change of focus led to sampling vocals of voice actors.

Each Japanese Vocaloid is given an anime-type character with specifications on age, height, weight, and musical strengths (genre, pitch range and ideal tempos). The characters of the first three installments of the series are created by illustrator Kei.

Any rights or obligations arising from the vocals created by the software belong to the software user. Just like any music synthesizer, the software is treated as a musical instrument and the vocals as sound. Under the term of license, the Character Vocal Series software can be used to create vocals for commercial or non-commercial use as long as the vocals do not offend public policy. In other words, the user is bound under the term of license with Crypton not to synthesize derogatory or disturbing lyrics. On the other hand, copyrights to the mascot image and name belong to Crypton. Under the term of license, a user cannot commercially distribute a vocal as a song sung by the character, nor use the mascot image on commercial products, without Crypton's consent.

Hatsune Miku (初音ミク?) is the first installment in the Vocaloid 2 Character Vocal Series released on August 31, 2007. The name of the title and the character of the software was chosen by combining Hatsu (初, First?), Ne (音, Sound?), and Miku (未来, Future?).The data for the voice was created by actually sampling the voice of Saki Fujita, a Japanese voice actress. Unlike general purpose speech synthesizers, the software is tuned to create J-pop songs commonly heard in anime, but it is possible to create songs from other genres.

Nico Nico Douga played a fundamental role in the recognition and popularity of the software. Soon after the release of the software, users of Nico Nico Douga started posting videos with songs created by the software. According to Crypton, a popular video with a comically-altered Miku holding a leek, singing Ievan Polkka, presented multifarious possibilities of applying the software in multimedia content creation.As the recognition and popularity of the software grew, Nico Nico Douga became a place for collaborative content creation. Popular original songs written by a user would generate illustrations, animation in 2D and 3D, and remixes by other users. Other creators would show their unfinished work and ask for ideas.

On October 18, 2007, an Internet BBS website reported Hatsune Miku was suspected to be victim of censorship by Google and Yahoo!, since images of Miku did not show up on the image searches.[15] Google and Yahoo denied any censorship on their part, blaming the missing images on a bug that does not only affect "Hatsune Miku" but other search keywords as well. Both companies expressed a willingness to fix the problem as soon as possible.Images of Miku were relisted on Yahoo on October 19, 2007.

A Hatsune Miku manga called Maker Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix began serialization in the Japanese manga magazine Comic Rush on November 26, 2007, published by Jive. The manga is drawn by Kei, the original character designer for Hatsune Miku. A second manga called Hachune Miku no Nichijō Roipara! drawn by Ontama began serialization in the manga magazine Comp Ace on December 26, 2007, published by Kadokawa Shoten.

The character's first appearance in an anime is in (Zoku) Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, where she (and various other people and characters) try out to be the voice of Meru Otonashi. For online multi-player games, the Japanese version of PangYa started a campaign with Hatsune Miku on May 22, 2008 in which a player could purchase her outfit for one of the characters. Her first appearance in a video game is in 13-sai no Hello Work DS (13歳のハローワークDS?) for the Nintendo DS where she is included as one of the characters.Hatsune Miku was given a PlayStation Portable game called Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA that was released on July 2, 2009 by Sega.Hatsune Miku made a cameo appearance in the Lucky Star OVA in the form of Kagami's cosplay in her dream. She made a vocal appearance in the finale ending theme of the anime Akikan!. Hatsune Miku received the 2008 Seiun Award in the free category.There is a costume for the characters of Tales of Graces available as downloadable content for 400 Wii points.

On August 27, 2008, Victor Entertainment released the album Re:package which contains a collection of songs performed by Hatsune Miku and composed by a pair of dōjin artists named Livetune. The album sold over 20,000 copies in its first week and successfully broke into Oricon's charts by placing fifth for the week. Following up with the success of Re:package, Victor Entertainment released Livetune's second Hatsune Miku album, Re:MIKUS, on March 25, 2009, which contains many remixed versions of original songs from various original music artists, such as Supercell and kz of Livetune.It also contains four more original songs sung by Hatsune Miku, which again were made by original dōjin artists.
As a virtual idol, Hatsune Miku performed a "live" concert during Animelo Summer Live on August 23, 2009 and at Anime Festival Asia (AFA), Singapore in 2009.In addition, singer Gackt performed alongside Miku.

In late November 2009, a petition was launched in order to get a custom made Hatsune Miku aluminum plate (8 cm x 12 cm, 3.1" x 4.7") made that will be used as a balancing weight for the Japanese Venus spacecraft explorer Akatsuki which will be launched in summer 2010. Started by Hatsune Miku fan Sumio Morioka that goes by chodenzi-P, this project has received the backing of Dr. Seiichi Sakamoto of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. On December 22, 2009, the petition exceeded the needed 10,000 signatures necessary to have the plates made. Kagamine Rin and Len

Released on December 27, 2007, Kagamine Rin/Len (鏡音リン・レン?) is the second installment of the Vocaloid 2 Character Vocal Series. Their surname was chosen by combining Kagami (鏡, Mirror?), Ne (音, Sound?), with the first syllables of their given names a pun on "Left" and "Right". According to Vocaloid's official blog, the package includes two voice banks: one for Rin and another for Len, both provided by the voice actor Asami Shimoda. Despite the double voice banks, the package still sells at the same price as Hatsune Miku.Their only cameo appearance in an anime is in (Zoku) Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei, where the two, Miku, Kaito, and Meiko (and various other people and characters) try out to be the voice of Meru Otonashi.
On June 12, 2008, Crypton announced the updated edition, named "act2", will be released in early July 2008. Users who had bought the old version will get an expansion disc free of charge. Megurine Luka

The third installment in the character vocal series, Megurine Luka (巡音ルカ?), was released on January 30, 2009.Her surname combines Meguri (巡, Circulate?) and Ne (音, Sound?). Luka's voice is that of a twenty-year-old female and she can sing in both Japanese and English. Her voice bank was sampled from Yū Asakawa. The manga artist Kei, who illustrated Miku, Rin, and Len, also designed her mascot. However, unlike previous mascots in the series, her costume is not based on a school uniform but more based on a modern style cheongsam.

Story

Jun'ichi Nagase attends a prestigious high school. He has the nickname Geno Killer since he was rebellious in middle school. This is used, inadvertently, to help a girl named Yuuhi Katagiri from trouble. She later transfers to his school, and in order to protect Yuuhi from danger, Jun'ichi is forced to kiss her. Not understanding what happened, she screams at him. Subsequently, it turns out that Yuuhi is his fiancé as arranged by their parents. Their parents discuss the matter and order them to go out together for a month to restore their relationship. If their relationship does not get better, the engagement will then be canceled.

Characters

Jun'ichi Nagase (長瀬準一, Nagase Jun'ichi^?): Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (anime); Jun'ichi is the main protagonist of the series. He is a second year high school student and had a quarrel with a transfer student, Yuuhi Katagiri on the first day of school. It turns out that Yuuhi is his fiancé as arranged by his family. He had a reputation of a delinquent in junior high school until his sister Minato decided to move in with him. He has a snarky attitude and is often teased by everyone around him, including his teacher. His life takes a drastic turn with Yuuhi entering his life.When he first met her he had the impression she was a helpless girl and kissed her because of a misunderstanding. After that, Yuuhi becomes much more violent towards Jun'ichi. Since Yuuhi is often harassed, he finds himself protecting her; as time progresses, their love for each other grows, even though neither of them will admit it. Throughout the anime series it is hinted that Jun'ichi has romantic feelings for his sister Minato, but he is reluctant to admit this even though he sometimes has fantasies about her. However, in the final episode, he realizes that he cannot live without Minato and confesses to her.

Yuuhi Katagiri (片桐優姫, Katagiri Yūhi^?): Voiced by: Kazane (PC), Rie Kugimiya (anime/PS2); Yuuhi is the main heroine in the series. She is very beautiful, which often causes trouble for her, such as being harassed constantly by men. One day, when she was being harassed by two men, she was saved by Jun'ichi. She transferred to his school hoping meet her fiance because she heard that he was in this area. Later, after a misunderstanding from Jun'ichi, he kisses her in public, causing her to have ill feelings towards him, but her feelings grow more for him throughout the series.

Minato Nagase (長瀬湊, Nagase Minato^?): Voiced by: Hikaru Mizusawa (PC), Aya Hirano (anime/PS2); Minato is Jun'ichi's younger sister. She is a year younger than him and attends the same school as him as a first year high school student. She is capable in all areas of house hold related work and is proud of it. She also has unique abilities, like listening to the ground to detect the presence of animals, as well as be able to communicate with them. She has feelings for Jun'ichi. She mentions that she was an adopted sister once, but later says it was a joke. Minato is blood-related to Jun'ichi in the PC game, in the PS2 version she is not related to him, and it is implied that she is not blood-related to Jun'ichi in the anime.

Tsukasa Kiryu (霧生つかさ, Kiryū Tsukasa^?): Voiced by: Mina Motoyama (PC), Marina Inoue (anime/PS2); Tsukasa is a second year student in the same class as Jun'ichi, and is his childhood friend. She is a member of the News club. She has a lively personality and loves to gossip as well as tease Jun'ichi.

Nagomi Shiraishi (白石なごみ, Shiraishi Nagomi^?): Voiced by: Miru (PC), Ryō Hirohashi (anime/PS2); A first year high school student in the same class as Minato. She has an air of mystery around her, strongly hinted of being an alien, and can be found just about anywhere at the right time.

Mitsuki Siina (椎名観月, Shiina Mitsuki^?): Voiced by: Misono Moritani (PC), Rie Tanaka (anime/PS2); Mitsuki Siina is the president of the student council. She is a third year student and very popular amongst the student body. She likes to use Jun'ichi as her lapdog getting him to do favors for her or perform activities for the student body.

Mikoto Tachibana (橘ミコト, Tachibana Mikoto^?): Voiced by: Fūri Samoto (PC), Erino Hazuki (anime/PS2); Mikoto is a third year high school student in the same class as Mitsuki.

Karen Ayanokouji (綾小路華恋, Ayanokōji Karen^?): Voiced by: Emiri Katō (anime/PS2); Karen is a second year student that is in the same class as Jun'ichi. She is an original character that was first introduced in Parallel. She comes from a very rich family like Yuuhi and prides herself on acting like a lady. She eventually admits to falling in love with Jun'ichi.

Fuyuhiko Nishino (西野冬彦, Nishino Fuyuhiko^?): Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio (PC), Akira Ishida (anime/PS2); Nishino is Jun'ichi's best friend and is also a second year student in the same class as Jun'ichi. He is full of strange ideas that often put Jun'ichi into trouble, and is very close to Tsukasa being in very much the same line of thinking with her. He is the vice-president of the student council.

Seijirou Sugishita (杉下清次郎, Sugishita Seijirō^?): Voiced by: Jin Aoshima (PC), Rikiya Koyama (anime/PS2); Jun'ichi's teacher. While strict with regards to academics, he has a rather eccentric personality, especially towards Jun'ichi.

Sai Fijimiya (藤宮彩, Fujimiya Sai^?): Voiced by: Hikaru Kaga (PC), Yū Kobayashi (anime/PS2)

Plot:
The story is a shōnen comedy that takes place in the Kanagawa Prefecture, and centers on Keitaro Urashima and his attempts to fulfill a childhood promise that he made with a girl to enter Tokyo University together. However, he has forgotten the name of the girl he made the promise to and hopes to be accepted into Tokyo University in order to find her.

Despite failing the entrance exam twice, he becomes manager of the family-owned girls' dorm Hinata House (日向荘, Hinata Sō?, also known as Hinata Apartments) and must balance his new responsibilities with his attempts to pass the university entrance exam. At Hinata House, Keitaro meets Naru Narusegawa, who is also studying to enter Tokyo University.

Naru ranked first in the whole of Japan on the practice exams, and Keitaro convinces her to help him study. Keitaro accidentally reads a small section of Naru's diary and as the two grow closer through their studies, Keitaro becomes increasingly convinced that Naru may be the girl he made the promise with. On the second day of the Tokyo University exam, Keitaro asks Naru about the promise and is stunned when she tells him he is mistaken.

Despite their studying, and Naru's mock exam results, they both fail the exams. The pair then have an argument and independently run off to Kyoto to clear their heads. While on their trip they settle their differences and meet Mutsumi Otohime, who lives in Okinawa and is also studying for the Tokyo University exams.

After returning from Kyoto, Keitaro and Naru eventually decide to retake the exams. After a while, Mutsumi moves to Tokyo, and the three begin to study together. During this period, Naru becomes convinced that Mutsumi is Keitaro's promised girl, but Mutsumi states that she made a childhood promise with Naru, not Keitaro.

During the Tokyo University exams, Keitaro believes he has failed them once again and runs away before finding out his results. After learning of this, Naru chases after him without checking her exam results, and is eventually followed by the rest of the residents of Hinata House who announce that Keitaro and Naru both passed the exams along with Mutsumi. However, at the Tokyo University opening ceremony, Keitaro has an accident and is unable to attend the University for three months.

After recovering from his injuries, Keitaro decides to study overseas with Noriyasu Seta. As Keitaro leaves, Naru finally confesses her true feelings to him at the airport and decides to wait for him to return.

When Keitaro returns, he and Naru finally begin to express their feelings for each other. After they deal with new obstacles, Grandma Hina returns to Hinata House and reveals Naru is the girl of Keitaro's promise. Three years later, a wedding ceremony is held at Hinata House for Naru and Keitaro as they finally fulfill their childhood promise to each other.

Hinata Inn Residents:

Urashima Keitaro

浦島景太郎

is the main character of the series, a second-year ronin studying to enter Tokyo University (sometimes known as "Todai"). As a child, the young Keitaro made a promise with a girl, based on a story the children overheard that two people who love each other will live "happily ever after" if they enter 'Todai' [1]. Keitaro is set on gaining entrance to Todai to fulfil the promise he made to his childhood friend, even though he cannot properly remember either her name or her face. Later, in volume 13, it is revealed that Todai may not even refer to Tokyo University after all.
After failing to pass the entrance exams on his second attempt Keitaro's parents seem either unwilling, or unable, to let him continue living at home while he studies. As a result he travels to "Hinata Inn", a hotel owned by his grandmother to find a place to stay and study.[2] Following a misunderstanding where the residents believe him to be a burglar and peeping tom, Keitaro discovers the hotel is now a female-only dormitory.[3]
To compound the confusion, Keitaro's Aunt Haruka mistakenly assumes he has passed the entrance exams and is already a Todai student; consequently the residents agree he can stay. When he fails to correct her and is discovered to be lying, he is forced to leave until Haruka announces that the deeds to the inn have been transferred to Keitaro by his grandmother: Keitaro is, in fact, the new landlord.[4][5][6]
In the anime television series, Keitaro is voiced by Yūji Ueda in Japanese and Derek Stephen Prince in English. Keitaro's name is taken from mangaka Keitarō Arima.

Narusegawa Naru
成瀬川なる

Is the second protagonist of the series. She is 17 years old, just about to graduate from high school, and a resident of the Hinata Inn. She is very intelligent, having placed top in the nation in the college practice entrance exams at their cram school. She is popular, beautiful but constantly tries to hide this as she studies to gain entrance to Todai. However, she has an extremely fiery temper and a tendency to inflict violent physical punishment (most usually on Keitaro). She arrived at the Hinata Inn as a result (she believes) of her friendship with Kitsune, who introduced her to Granny Hina. At that stage she does not remember staying at the Hinata Inn as a very young child.
Of all the girls at the Hinata Inn, she is most often the unwilling and unwitting victim of Keitaro's clumsiness, which often results in her ending up naked, partially clothed, or placed in any number compromising positions. Keitaro invariably suffers as a result.
Despite initially taking a (literally) violent dislike to Keitaro, she comes to develop very strong feelings for him. The main part of her character arc is that she has great difficulty in admitting these feelings, both to herself, to the hapless Keitaro and to the world in general.
Like Keitaro, she strives to get into Tokyo University for two reasons: the first is a promise she made to her one-time tutor (and object of an enormous crush) Noriyasu Seta, the second is the dimly recalled promise made to someone whose name and face she cannot remember.
In the anime television series, Naru is voiced by Yui Horie in Japanese and Dorothy Elias-Fahn in English.

Otohime Mutsumi
乙姫むつみ

Is a very sweet, gentle, frail, anemic, clumsy and softly-spoken 20 year old girl. Naru and Keitaro first encounter her while while taking some time off for a brief vacation after Keitaro fails his Todai entrance exam for a third successive time, just like Mutsumi.
Despite her outwardly poor physical health, she is actually extremely resilient and is seemingly able to recover quickly from any injury, much like Keitaro. Indeed, in both manga and anime, Naru notices the similarities between Keitaro and Mutsumi, most notably when they first meet on Naru and Keitaro's trip to Kyoto. She has a very sweet and generous personality, often sacrificing her own happiness for others. She lives on or near the island of Okinawa and has an affinity for watermelons and turtles.
Due to frequent near-death experiences, her outlook on life is somewhat disconnected with reality, a point reinforced by her almost surreal optimism. She has a number of unusual abilities, such as being able to speak "turtlese", which she uses to communicate with her turtles, a guessing method she uses for exams which involves the sides of a pencil and a propensity for sleepwalking. This latter 'talent' leads her into trouble (once she sleepwalked out her window and was hit by a car). Despite her many eccentricities she is extremely intelligent, scoring full marks in the practice exams. Yet she still fails to get into Tokyo University because, amongst other things, she forgets to write her name on the test paper, causing her to obtain a grade Z on at least one test paper.
As the story develops it transpires that, as a young child, she spent some time living at the Hinata inn. In volume 10, Mutsumi claims to have played matchmaker for Naru and Keitaro after it became clear that she made a promise to go to Tokyo University with him. Although she loved Keitaro (and admits she still does to Naru), she let him go for Naru's sake by deliberately losing a game of rock-paper-scissors to decide which of them would become Keitaro's wife.
She then made a subsequent promise with Naru that both of them would later go to Tokyo University, so that Naru would remember the promise made to Keitaro. Before leaving Hinata, she gave Naru her Liddo-kun doll in memory of their friendship. Like Keitaro and Naru, she finally passes the Todai entrance exam, discovering her result just before setting off to rescue Keitaro from the island of Pararakelse.
She studies at Todai, later entering graduate school. At the end of the manga she helps out in organizing Keitaro and Naru's wedding by bringing a plethora of watermelons.
Tokyopop sometimes misspells her name as "Mitsumi" or "Matsumi".
In the anime television series, Mutsumi is voiced by Satsuki Yukino in Japanese and Julie Ann Taylor in English.

Maehara Shinobu
前原しのぶ

Is a 13-year-old schoolgirl who, after a bad start with Keitaro, develops a crush on him. Shinobu is a boarder at the Hinata Inn, in room 201. In the anime, she is first introduced as a grieving girl who has run away from home due to domestic turmoil; however, in the manga, she is already at the Hinata Inn when Keitaro arrives and her parents are still together.
She is quite skilled in both cooking and household chores as she became the cook (in the anime, her family once owned a restaurant in town prior to their divorce). Quiet and shy, she is overly caring of others' feelings and this contributes to her own emotional frailty.
She is the first girl to fall for Keitaro and in the manga attempts to avoid him because of this. In both the anime and manga, she thinks highly of Keitaro and will often be at the verge of tears when she thinks that he is in trouble or likes someone else. In the epilogue 4 years later she has since grown her hair out and has become more mature, though she retains her sincere personality. She still has a crush on Keitaro and hasn't given up on her dream of being his girlfriend (and likely never will).
The reason Shinobu decided to leave home and live at the Hinata Inn was because of the marital problems between her father,and her mother, whose names are never mentioned. In the anime, their marital problems lead to their divorce. Shinobu's parents arrive at the Hinata Inn and argue over who Shinobu should live with. However, Shinobu decides to remain at the Hinata Inn, to which her mother is against as she believes the Hinata Inn is a bad place full of rowdy young girls. They eventually concede, allowing Shinobu to remain living at the Inn.
In the manga, she was rated the #2 most popular girl by the readers, though since the end of the manga she has become the most popular.

In the anime television series, Shinobu is voiced by Masayo Kurata in Japanese and Bridget Hoffman in English.

Aoyama Motoko
青山素子

Is an intense 15-year old school girl, who practices the martial art of kendo, as well as being a member of the Shinmeryuu sword school (which is also referred to in Akamatsu's later work Mahou Sensei Negima, as the school of the character Setsuna). Motoko is a resident at the Hinata Inn, living in room 302.
She has difficulty relating to other people, especially men, whom she finds to be a distraction that keeps her from being able to concentrate fully on her studies and practice. She also dislikes men because her sister left the dojo to marry. Her relationship with Keitaro initially resembles Naru's relationship with him in some ways; all too often he finds himself on the receiving end of various attacks as a result of his frequent mishaps or simply bad luck. She eventually warms to him somewhat and eventually finds herself developing strong feelings for him which she vehemently denies until near the end of the series. On two occasions this causes severe problems for both Motoko and Keitaro. In later volumes she develops a habit of writing trashy romance stories involving the two of them, often involuntarily.
Motoko has an older sister, Tsuruko, who gave up the life of the sword to marry. Tsuruko is far stronger at kendo than Motoko; Motoko both greatly admires and fears her older sister. However, Tsuruko believes that Motoko has more potential than she herself does, and that Motoko lost her drive to improve when Tsuruko married. Motoko is also the next in line to inherit the Aoyama family's Kyoto dojo as she is not married. It is notable that Tsuruko is actually Motoko's biological sister. They are two of the few characters in the series who are actually blood-related as siblings (the second siblings couple is presented by Kaolla and Amalla Su).
Motoko has only two serious fears in the world: Tsuruko and, for some unspecifed reason, turtles (even though Tsuruko correlates it to her intense dislike for men).
In the anime, Motoko is popular at her school for her kendo skills. She frequently spends time with Sachiyo Matsumoto (松本幸代, Matsumoto Sachiyo?), Emi Ichikawa (市川えみ, Ichikawa Emi?) and Kikuko Onoue (尾上菊子, Onoue Kikuko?), who are all fans of her. Kikuko is especially protective of Motoko and has criticised Motoko's change in personality and decline in kendo skills since Keitaro began living at Hinata Inn, referring to him as a distraction. In the anime television series, Motoko is voiced by Yū Asakawa in Japanese and Mona Marshall in English.

Su Kaolla
カオラ・スゥ

Is a 14-year old foreign transfer student. She is also a boarder at the Hinata Inn, in room 301.
Su is the princess of Molmol, a fictional island nation located near the International Date Line. The dot on her forehead seems to have something to do with the 3-eyed symbol of Molmol. She is often barefoot and dressed in nothing else except her heavily altered school uniform in almost every anime episode and manga chapter, or some otherwise scant costume. To top her personality, she is above all extremely hyperactive, usually hugging (or, in Keitaro's case, kicking) someone, trying to eat something, especially bananas and/or Tama-chan, or inventing some potentially dangerous new device. She also has a tendency to snuggle against a person while she is sleeping and usually crushes them while doing it.
Molmol is a kingdom where the moon sometimes appears red. It also uses a western naming order, although the Hinata Inn residents never seem to pick this up: Su is actually Kaolla Su's family name.
Su likes all the other residents in the Hinata Apartments and gets along well with them, though they have difficulty keeping up with her hyperactive tendencies; only the athletic Motoko seems to be able to tolerate and keep up with her. Her like for Keitaro stems from the fact that he reminds her of the person she refers to as her older brother (actually her cousin, whom she grew up with). However, it can be inferred that she eventually comes to care about Keitaro as much as and perhaps even more than her older brother.
While she has stated that she likes everyone in the Hinata apartments (including Sarah, who was sent there for a short period of time), it is apparent that Kaolla shares a much deeper relationship with Sarah and Motoko as compared to the other residents. Her ambition is to return to her homeland to start a computing school and transform her country into a technological power that will rival, and eventually conquer, Japan.
As if her never ending energy, strange customs, and mechanical finesse were not strange enough, Su also possesses the ability to transform into a more adult version of herself on a single night every year, when the moon glows red. In anime she admitted to have fallen in love with Keitaro while she was in this form, despite her transformation just last a few seconds because there was no red moon. Though this is not explicitly stated in the manga, it is implied extremely heavily with the adult Su even kissing Keitaro and proclaiming herself his girlfriend afterwards.
Her room in the Hinata Inn is a faithful recreation of Molmol's natural habitat, complete with banana trees, a waterfall, and a small lake, along with a high-tech laboratory. In the anime television series, Su is voiced by Reiko Takagi in Japanese and Wendee Lee in English.

Mitsune "Kitsune" Konno
紺野みつね

Also known as Kitsune, which means "fox" in Japanese, is a 19-year old freelance writer (who never seems to write anything). She is frequently drunk and seems to enjoy teasing Keitaro at every opportunity. Kitsune is also a boarder at the Hinata Inn, in room 205.
Her nickname comes from a combination of her first and last names, and the fact that she hardly ever fully opens both eyes at the same time (mostly when she is surprised). As a result, she has a perpetually fox-like, vulpine expression. She's a practical joker and troublemaker; her mission in life seems to be to ensure that things never get too dull or those around her too complacent. She is also seen drinking a lot. In the manga (Volume 4) Kitsune's bedroom walls are densely lined with bottles of alcoholic drinks. She is also the one who taught Kaolla Japanese.
Kitsune is more flirtatious, especially with Keitaro, than any of the other residents. She is also the bustiest in the household, second only to Mutsumi Otohime, and is unafraid of using her charms to get what she wants, whatever it might be. Her relationship with Keitaro eventually develops into a "little brother/big sister" connection (though Keitaro is actually older than her).
She also is a bit greedy, as seen in a flashback sequence when she tells Keitaro about how much Naru's innocence ended up dismissing possible boyfriends; Kitsune was shown to encourage her to date a rich boy just because of his wealth. Also, when the girls are traveling to Molmol to try and bring Keitaro back to Hinata Inn, the only thing she thinks of is the inheritance that will be left to him and the girl that he chooses whenever Hina returns, even though, later on, Kitsune lets him stay with Naru. She eventually takes over the Hinata Tea House when Haruka leaves and picks up Haruka's habit of smoking. Between the start and the finish Kitsune held two other jobs. Her name is derived from the name of the mangaka Mitsune Ayasaka.[7] In the anime television series, Kitsune is voiced by Junko Noda in Japanese and Barbara Goodson in English

Urashima Haruka

浦島はるか

Is Keitaro Urashima's "aunt" (actually his cousin). In the anime she dislikes being called aunt by Keitaro and often smashes him in the face when she is referred to as and corrects him by saying "its Haruka-san" (san being a respectful term to your elder in most cases)
Haruka Urashima is the only child of Hinata Urashima's eldest daughter, Yoko Urashima; her second daughter was Keitaro's mother. After the death of Yoko, Hinata adopted her granddaughter. Therefore, Haruka is Keitaro's legal aunt in addition to being his actual cousin. It was as a teenager that, while working at the inn, she was first called "Aunty Haruka" by her baby cousin Keitaro – the same time that Keitaro first met both Mutsumi and Naru.
Haruka is the ryōbo ("house-mother") of the Joshi Senyō Ryō Hinata-sō ("Women's Only Dormitory, Hinata House") and runs the Wafū Chabō Hinata ("Traditional Japanese Tea-Room Hinata"). Haruka is constantly seen smoking a cigarette. Like Naru, she has a fiery temper (and great physical prowess to match), which she hides under a calm, detached exterior.
Having traveled the world with Seta and Sara's mom, Haruka's skills in martial arts rival Seta's and can even surpass his when she is angry. She is also very skilled with firearms, which shows when she shoots Kaolla's missiles at Seta's head after being teased by him. Haruka is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara in Japanese and Mari Devon in English.

Urashima Hinata
浦島ひなた

Also known as Grandma Hina, is the original manager of Hinata. Upon retiring, she entrusted Keitaro with looking over the Hinata Inn so she could travel the world.
In the manga, Grandma Hina knew all along that Naru was the girl Keitaro promised to go to Tokyo U with. She also knew the location of the Liddo-Kun shaped time capsule Keitaro, Naru, and Mutsumi buried beneath the sandbox when they were children. In the anime television series, Grandma Hina is voiced by Masako Nozawa.

Seta Noriyasu

瀬田記康

Is a Tokyo University graduate and professor who specialises in archaeology, appearing to be a parody of Indiana Jones. Like Keitaro, he was a third-year ronin. He's clumsy - especially with women and his relationship to Haruka seems to be similar to Keitaro's relationship with Naru (i.e. both get physically thrashed around by their respective female and are married to them eventually as well as both of them apparently being invulnerable to just about everything), a terrible driver (his arrival often heralded by his van crashing down from the sky), and an exceptionally skilled martial artist, all partly due to his complete lack of self-preservation. Seta spends a good deal of his time traveling the world on one expedition or another. His goal seems to be to find evidence of the ancient turtle civilization that once flourished throughout east Asia.
Seta is also something of an adventurer, and possesses a van that shares his indestructible nature, and apparently has a submarine mode. In the past, Haruka had a major crush on him, though he seemed oblivious. They went on many expeditions together. Along with them on the expeditions was Sara's mother, an American that looked remarkably like Naru, who later died. Her last request was that Seta marry Haruka. This wish was granted, and Haruka and Seta married at the ruins of Todai, capital of the Turtle civilization. Seta is Sara's guardian, and she refers to him as "papa."
Seta is most probably a practitioner of Jeet Kune Do[citation needed]. In most situations, his fighting stance is almost an exact mirror of Bruce Lee's proprietary stance[citation needed]. Also, in the anime, Sara even uses the term "Jeet Kune Do" in reference to her father's fighting technique[citation needed]. In the anime television series, Seta is voiced by Yasunori Matsumoto in Japanese and Kirk Thornton in English.
His name is derived from the name of the mangaka Noriyasu Seta.

McDougal Sarah
サラ・マクドゥガル
Is a 9-year-old American from California and Seta's adopted daughter.[11] She initially delights in making Keitaro's life miserable, however, like most of the girls in the story, she eventually warms to him, even if she still calls him a dork.
Sarah is left for a time in the care of the Hinata Inn residents by Seta, as he feels that travelling the world with him on expeditions would be too disruptive to her childhood. There, she develops a close friendship with Su, most likely because of their shared disdain for the general order of things. In both the manga and anime version, Sarah even comments on how "Kaolla and I are not Japanese!" during a meal, when Motoko forces them all – sans Naru, who is in a field trip to Kyoto – to have a samurai-like diet. Interestingly, Sara quickly becomes Su's new playmate, taking the place of Motoko, who was the only person in the house to keep up with Su's energy. Sara and Su eventually become so close they change their hairstyles to match, both of them with two pigtails. Sara eventually does return to travelling with Seta after his marriage to Haruka.
Sarah has an uncle in California. Her mother, now deceased, formerly worked with Seta and Haruka on an archaeological dig and competed for Seta's romantic attention.
Sara possesses no unusual talents or skills, save for a certain gift for Jeet Kune Do learned from Seta, though she is adept at bashing Keitaro on the head with priceless artifacts often pulled out of nowhere. She has a panda-shaped birthmark on her buttocks, which she avoids showing at all costs. She shares her family name with Cynthia McDougal from Ken Akamatsu's previous manga series A.I. Love You. In the anime television series, Sarah is voiced by Yumiko Kobayashi in Japanese and Julie Maddalena in English.

Urashima Kanako
浦島可奈子

Is Keitaro's adopted younger sister. Kanako is a master of disguise and is able to impersonate anyone, which she uses to try to get control over the Hinata Inn (Keitaro is the only one who can see through her disguise at simple view); she also has a passion for erotic bondage. Kanako never came to see Keitaro as a brother, and had loved him since they were children. When they promised to run an inn together when they grew up, she had assumed it would be as husband and wife. However, Keitaro does not share these thoughts and only sees her as a sister.
She first appears in Volume 11 in the manga, and in the Love Hina Again OVA. Her appearance is often accompanied by the sound of a bell carried on the tail of her unusual cat Kuro.
After travelling with her grandmother for some years, she returns to Japan to fulfill her promise to her brother to run an inn together. She arrives while Keitaro was away in the U.S.A., and after assuming control, immediately changes the Hinata Inn from a girls' dormitory back into an inn. The residents are forced to either stay and work for her, or to leave.
She soon realizes that all of the girls in Hinata Inn have some sort of affection for her brother, and tests their affection in a variety of ways. She then tries to drive them away by being as mean and cruel as she could to them. At first it seemed to be working, as one by one everyone but Naru left the new Hinata Inn. When the girls (except for Naru) start to suspect Kanako's feelings for Keitaro and why she forces them to be mean to him, they form the "Hinata House Liberation Front" in order to reclaim the Inn. Kanako, Naru and Mutsumi form the Hinata-rōshi (日向浪士, translated as "Hinata Rebel Alliance") to reclaim it under the name Urashima Kanako-no-suke (浦島可奈子之助). ).
Even without knowing her, Kanako had harbored a deep hatred for the little girl to which Keitaro promised to go to Tokyo University with, as she believes that the promise is what plagued his life with bad luck. As such, she believed that by eliminating this girl, the "curse" would be lifted. At first, she thought that Kitsune, who was leading the "Liberation Front", was this girl, but in the nick of time, Naru ended up revealing that she was most likely the girl. Disheartened for having trusted her unwilling sworn enemy, Kanako attempted to sabotage Naru's relationship with Keitaro upon his return. However, in the end, she recognized that it was Naru whom he liked, and reluctantly accepts their relationship. In the anime television series, Kanako is voiced by Natsuko Kuwatani in Japanese and Melissa Fahn in English.

Tsukune Aono is a normal high school freshman who is unable to get into any private school, due to his dismal grades. The only school he is finally accepted into turns out to be a secret school for supernatural monsters and mythical creatures (yōkai), who are disguised as humans. He quickly becomes friends with the beautiful Moka Akashiya, who turns out to be a vampire attracted to the sweet taste of his blood (and Tsukune's only, it turns out). While at first Moka was upset upon discovering that Tsukune was actually a human, she realizes that he's the first real friend she had ever made. Tsukune quickly realizes his admission into a monster school must have been a mistake and fears for his life.

Despite Moka's vampiric nature, she is a kind girl and Tsukune quickly falls for her. Moka also quickly falls in love with Tsukune after they meet. He decides to stay and be near her, despite the various dangers. He must hide his human identity from the faculty and other students, while trying to keep his grades up and avoiding conflicts with the various not-so-mythological monsters lurking around campus. Tsukune soon discovers that when he removes the "rosario" around Moka's neck, she transforms into a super-vampire, stronger and more powerful than almost any other creature at the school. However, in this state, she has an entirely different, often cold and merciless personality, so the rosario is only removed in dire emergencies. Tsukune is the only person who can physically remove it to transform Moka, and only in the case of an emergency (the rosario remains physically bound to Moka, while Tsukune attempts to willfully remove it in a moment immediately preceding, and sometimes interjecting - a malignant situation).

As the school year continues, Tsukune becomes involved with other students who start out as enemies but who are won over into becoming his friends: Kurumu Kurono, a succubus who originally fixated on Tsukune as both a means of propagating her species and a weapon against Moka (whom she originally hated for attracting all the male students away from her); Yukari Sendo, an eleven-year-old witch who is the smartest student at the academy (but prejudiced against by the other students since witches are not truly considered monsters, but somewhere between monsters and humans) who developed a major crush on Moka, and a softer crush on Tsukune after they defended her against a pack of bullies. Ginei Morioka, a second-year student who is not only the President of the school Newspaper Club but also a werewolf and a pervert who can't understand why Moka is attracted to Tsukune and not to him; and Mizore Shirayuki, a yuki-onna who began by stalking Tsukune believing them to be soulmates. However, after Tsukune befriends each of the girls, they become friendly rivals along with Moka for Tsukune's affections and members of the school Newspaper Club with Tsukune and stand by him even after they learn that he is really a human. Introduced in the second manga serialization, Kokoa Shuzen is the younger half-sister of Moka Akashiya. Bearing a similar appearance to Moka, except for her orange hair and cyan eyes, she arrives as a first-year student to Yōkai Academy. Like her sister, Kokoa is also a vampire, but her powers are not sealed and does not carry the same supernatural strength Moka possesses. To compensate, she has a pet bat, Kou, that can transform into a variety of weapons. She has a deep hatred for Outer Moka and an obsession with Inner Moka. In the manga she finally accepts the fact that her "real" sister is sealed, though in the anime she is more persistent. As time goes on, they discover dangerous organizations like Antithesis and Fairy Tale and must do battle against them to keep the school and even both the monster and human worlds safe, and Tsukune starts to undergo changes that truly solidify his role as the link between the human and monster worlds.

Nanami Takahashi (高橋七美, Takahashi Nanami),
The series protagonist, is a high school girl who falls in love with the popular Yano Motoharu. They struggle with issues of trusting one another as the shadow of Yano's dead girlfriend, who was with another guy at the time she died, looms over them. Eventually Yano's inability to let go and her inability to focus on the future rather than the past lead to their breaking up. She eventually begins dating Take, but is unable to forget Yano completely. When Take proposes, she rejects him, then begins searching for Yano after meeting one of his coworkers and learning where he is. In the anime adaptation, she is voiced by Nozomi Sasaki.

Motoharu Yano (矢野元晴, Yano Motoharu)
Is a popular high school boy whose girlfriend, Nana, was killed in a car crash while out with another guy. He has a hard time trusting Nanami, and displays jealousy and possessiveness, to the point of physically abusing her. As the series progresses, he wrestles with his feelings for his dead girlfriend versus those for the living Nanami, whom he even calls "Nana-chan" at times. Yano moves to Tokyo with his mom, but after half a year he stops contacting Nanami, effectively breaking up with her. Masafumi "Take" Takeuchi (竹内匡史, Takeuchi Masafumi)
Is Yano's close friend and becomes a friend and confidant for Nanami after she begins dating Yano. As the series progresses, he finds himself falling in love with her, leaving him unsure how to proceed. When Yano breaks up with Nanami, they begin dating. He eventually proposes, but she turns him down. In the anime adaptation, he is voiced by Takuji Kawakubo.

Yuri Yamamoto (山本有里, Yamamoto Yuri)
is the younger sister of Nana, Yano's late girlfriend. She had a crush on Yano even while he was dating her sister. A week after Nana's death, Yano had sex with her. She originally believed he was simply using her, but later suspects he was pitying her. After Yano begins dating Nanami, she becomes an obstacle for their relationship as Yano continues displaying some closeness with her. In the anime adaptation, she is voiced by Erina Nakayama.

Ikuto Touhouin is a strong-willed teenager who runs away from home after a fight with his father. He takes a trip on a ship, but as luck would have it a sudden storm hits them on the seas and Ikuto is thrown overboard. Ikuto washes up on a remote island and is rescued by a girl named Suzu. Suzu and the other villagers have lived on the island ever since their ancestors were stranded over a hundred years ago when their ship sank. They named the island after their former ship, the Airantou. However, due to an incident in the past, all the current inhabitants of the island are girls. Ikuto is assigned to live with Suzu, an energetic and honest girl. Suzu lost her parents long ago and treats Ikuto like family, though her inability to distinguish between boy and girl leads to some awkward situations for Ikuto. Many of the other girls are also interested in Ikuto and aren’t going to stand idly by. Of course, after growing up on a remote island, some of these girls can’t really be described as normal.

Kazuma Kannagi was considered useless within his family because he could not use Enjutsu, the power to control flames. When he was defeated by Ayano Kannagi, one of his relatives, in a bout to decide who the wielder of Enraiha, a sword that was wielded by the family heir, he was banished from the family. Four years later, he returns, now a master of Fuujutsu, the power to control wind, with a new name: Kazuma Yagami. Soon after his return, he is reunited with Ayano and his younger brother, Ren, who is also gifted in Enjutsu. Soon, however, Kannagi family members are killed and the murder weapon is revealed to be Fuujutsu. Now Kazuma has to fight his family to prove that he is not the murderer.
